Literature Text

I.

Stasis.

sunbeams spill,
streaming down from above,
painting my upturned face
innumerable shades of gold.

A permeating heat,
hypnotizing -
my blood and the air become one
as I dissolve,
evaporate,
to unite with
that shimmering disk in the sky.

II.

Ra slips beneath the horizon,
death descends on the world-
Osiris tends his field in the darkness,
the languor remains-
heat less tangible,
yet
omnipresent.

(bare feet in the dust)

Kings form patterns
in the inky blue-black expanse above.

III.

Horus wheels above the valley
at first light,
incandescent gods dance
on the Nile,
reflected as fragments of liquid gold.

The sun again caressing mortality,
life slips slowly
back
into a sublime
stasis.
Note: Kmt is the Ancient Egyptian for "Egypt" :)

I was inspired by my trip there last year, and my recent studies on Ancient Egypt. This poem focuses particularly on the cyclicity of Ancient Egyptian life, with the Sun God and his various forms (Ra, Horus, Osiris) in the day/night cycle.

For tWR, some feedback questions:

-what was your primary feeling/and or emotion gathered from this poem?
-does the breaking up of the poem into three parts (and not merely stanzas) enhance or take away from the overall feeling of the poem?
-are the references to the Nile etc. subtle enough to give non-cliched impression of Egypt?
-did the poem relate to any other feelings or thoughts about life, immortality, etc? Just out of interest :)
-does the split from a first person experience to a more omniscient narrator create discontinuity in the poem?

Thanks for your time,

Any other thoughts, suggestions or comments would be appreciated :)

that one wishes to be come one with the sun
this helps to separate the diferent ideas and ways one wishes to be come one with the sun
I think that it would be easy for one to tell you are talking of egypt
that one must know the sun to become imortal
no
hope this helps
